Abstract

The author discusses rear end collisions and the efficiency of brake lights in providing a warning to following drivers. Alternative systems are discussed including engine deceleration displays and direct display of deceleration. A system is then proposed which addresses the need to reduce both thinking time and braking time by means of expanding arrays of stop lamps. A row of stop lights on the rear of a vehicle is matched by an interior display inside the following vehicle and comparisons of deceleration can be made by the driver.
