Abstract

This paper describes the current situation with regard to vehicle emissions and their control in China. The composition of China's traffic and the rapid growth in car manufacture and ownership are described. Details are given of laws, regulations and standards in current use and those planned for the future. Technical developments proposed to reduce, in particular, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions are outlined. These include improvements to fuel and ignition systems. Inspection and maintenance procedures are also being reviewed.
