Abstract

Introductory comments are made on the possibilities that exist for controlling the environmental impact of highway traffic noise. It is pointed out that while federal law directs highway agencies to consider the problem of noise during the development of highway projects these efforts are generally limited to measures that can be taken during the planning and design phases of a highway project, and those measures do not always solve the noise problem. Noise source control and land use control must be combined with these efforts.
