Abstract

This paper summarises the problems caused to the environment by motor vehicles, considers the trends in worldwide car ownership and estimates future emissions trends over the next 40 years. Trends in the emission of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen dioxide and carbon dioxide are discussed. An alternative scenario of low emissions, low consumption and low growth is considered. A situation where emissions are reduced below today's levels is demonstrated. Strategies necessary to achieve this situation are discussed. (A)
