Abstract

A first set of motor vehicle running costs for local use in cost-benefit analysis of road works, which represented a translation of tables compiled by Rodley Winfrey for the U.S.A., was prepared and published by the Institute in 1965. Since then the adoption of the S.I. system in South Africa and the relatively high price increases have necessitated the updating of these motor vehicle running costs. This report describes briefly the prevailing South African conditions in relations to vehicles and unit prices and the method used for updating the running costs. The full test of updated tables is included.
