Abstract

For its sixth theme, AIB has investigated motorcycle accidents. The reason for choosing this theme is the increasing number of motorcycle accidents: For many years until 2004, motorcyclists made up 5-6% of all deaths and serious injuries on our roads. This changed from 2005 and in 2007, motorcyclists made up 9% of all deaths and serious injuries. This figure must be seen in light of the fact that motorcyclists’ share of total road traffic is a lot less than 9%. The many serious motorcycle accidents in 2007 attracted a lot of media coverage, and many reasons were suggested. As there were no newer recent Danish investigations in the field, there was a need for an investigation which could highlight the reasons for the accidents, and establish a starting point for a goal orientated initiative for motorcyclists’ safety.
