Abstract

In 2004/2005, VicRoads provided funding to the Cities of Melbourne, Port Phillip and Yarra to implement the Saferoads Make Motorcycling Safer program. The implementation of the program was co-ordinated through Roadsafe Inner Melbourne Community Road Safety Council. After a preliminary review of the crash data for the period 2000 - 2004, a number of routes were identified on which a significant number of motorcycles had been involved in casualty crashes. Consequently, a consultant was engaged to undertake an audit of those ten routes from the perspective of motorcyclists and to report their findings and recommendations for improvements. A focus of the audit was to identify deficiencies which could be common throughout the road network, and recommend remedial measures which could have more universal application. The outcome of that audit, together with the findings and recommendations are summarised in this paper. These outcomes are supported by other observations, together with a brief assessment of system deficiencies and hopefully, a wake up call for road safety and road design professionals.
