A study was made of the availability and the demand for: 1) Emergency services, which are normally supplied by police, two vehicles, and ambulances 2) normal services, which are routine services, such as gasoline, food lodging, and 3) supplemental services. The following fundamental data sources were used: 1) Available literature, reports, articles, survey results, 2) data accumulated. By various toll facilities 3) personal interviews with cognizant personnel in several states, 4) personal observations and records of pertinent service data, and 5) a questionnaire submitted to a random sampling of automobile owners concerning their habits, preferences, etc. Although the percent quantity and quality of rest areas along the Interstate Highways are adequate in some areas steps are being implemented by most states to upgrade their existing rest facilities and build new ones along the lines of the AASNO policy.
