Abstract

Skidding occurs when one or more of the tyres on your vehicle loses traction on the road surface. When this happens, you could lose the ability to control direction and therefore have no control over where you go or what you hit. A skid usually occurs when changing speed or direction, or both. It is a frightening experience if you are not prepared for it. Skidding will not just happen; it is a progression of factors controlled by the driver. Skidding occurs more frequently in adverse road conditions when stopping distances are greater. You will probably not regain control of a skidding vehicle if you do nothing to correct the skid.
