Abstract

Forecasting motorization and trends in road traffic is not simple. To look into the future and come up with the right predictions regarding impending developments is something nobody succeeds with very well. It would also deprive us of the chance of making active efforts to improve the traffic situation. Realistically speaking, a look into the future invariably involves the question about what happened in the past and how things will develop if left to go on as they did before. This has also motivated a look at the present in order to investigate the reasons why things are as they are. The paper includes furthermore statistical information concerning different aspects of mobility, for example modes of transport, trip purpose, car ownership, motorization etc.
