Abstract

In comparison to many other groups of road users, motorcyclists are exposed to a greater risk of a serious or fatal injury in road traffic accidents. For example, of the 28,774 motorcycle users who were injured in accidents in 2017, 33.3% were seriously injured and 2.0% even fatally injured. Of all motor vehicle users injured in accidents (280,588) these proportions were 15.9% and 0.8% respectively. The main objective of the study is a comprehensive depiction of the mobility structures in motorcycle traffic in Germany, which at the same time indicates the provision of exposition data, which can then be used for further accident analyses if required. In addition, as well as an extensive depiction of the methodological principles of road traffic accident risk assessment, an overview of the existing results on accident risks as well as the causes of accidents in motorcycle traffic will also be presented. Of all motor vehicle types investigated in the German Vehicle Mileage Survey 2014 (traffic count), the highest risk is with riders of motorised two-wheeled vehicles (due to the survey, including motorised two-wheelers with insurance plate). In comparison to the average across all motorised vehicles, there is an around 4.3 times higher risk of involvement in an accident for motorised two-wheeled vehicles. The rate of those injured in an accident lies at around 7 times above the overall value, whereby the under 18 year-olds show an again greater risk here. In order to describe mobility structures in motorcycle traffic, own evaluations were carried out on the basis of the German Vehicle Mileage Survey 2014 (owner survey and traffic count) and the Mobility in Germany 2017 survey (MiD 2017), which are, in terms of their survey scope and timeliness, the best suited for this task. There is a motorcycle in 10.6% of all households and 22.3% of persons over 16 have a motorcycle licence. The typical motorcycle user is male, between 45 and 65 years old, employed and owns a car. The motorcycle is predominantly used for leisure purposes, whereby Sundays and public holidays are the typical days for longer motorcycle trips. In conclusion, on the basis of the results obtained in the course of the project, suggestions will be made on the closure of gaps in data and knowledge. (Author/publisher)
