Abstract
One of the items of the Dutch Multi-Year Programme for Traffic and Transport 1980-1984 is to promote cycle traffic outside built-up areas by creating special cycling facilities and to study the results. For this reason a special cycling facility was constructed near the route Elst-Arnhem. This report describes the investigations into the effects of the measures taken on the use, the experience and the traffic safety on the route. The conclusion is drawn that there has been no shift in the way of transport for utilitarian rides, that the bicycle is more often used for non-forced motives, the subjective safety for all ways of transport and the amount of cyclists have increased.
