Abstract

This paper presents a methodology for bus preemption at signalized intersections where there is a demand for bus preemption detected from all the approach links of the intersection. Traditional selective bus preemption approach uses simple checks such as bus schedule adherence. However, if there is a demand for bus priority from more than one approach link at the same time, there is no readily applicable algorithm or method to identify which approach link should have an increased green time or even a reduced red time. The proposed method adopts decision making at a multi-level via the intersection, link and bus route. Data from Automated Vehicle Location (AVL) is used for the purpose. A simulation evaluation of the proposed method and preliminary results from the evaluation are presented.
