Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to state the case for multi-modal transportation modelling, and to present the concepts of "supernetwork" and "hypernetwork" with a view to their use in extending the classical equilibrium model to incorporate multi-modal transport. The authors use the term multi-modal hypernetwork modelling to refer to multi-modal modelling. In their view, multi-modal hypernetwork modelling falls squarely within the mainstream of current transportation modelling. To illustrate this, a simple extension of the classical model architecture is presented that includes multi-modal hypernetwork modelling. This model architecture is used to identify a number of challenges and promising lines of research. For the covering abstract of the conference see ITRD E206647.
