Abstract

This article describes FiberLYNX, a digital multiplexer recently announced by the US company Intelect. It allows traffic engineers to monitor traffic flow on selected roads. If accidents, blockages, or other similar incidents occur, it enables video cameras to relay live video feeds back to a control centre. With appropriate software and cameras, an engineer there will be able to zoom on the scene to ascertain the cause of the delay. One FiberLYNX video module supports the whole spectrum of still, moving, teleconferencing, and videoconferencing video transmissions. It also uses a cost-effective compressed video format, that significantly reduces bandwidth requirements. FiberLYNX provides concurrent protocol support for voice, data, video, and local and wide area networks and is compatible with public and private SONET/SDH networks. It supports the data acquisition links, required to manage traffic signals, and enables their optimal setting to facilitate traffic flow. It is well adapted to the unpredictable roadway environment.
