For some time, stimulating multimodal transport of persons has been an important measure to achieve the requirements of a sustainable transport system. In improving the market share of multimodal transport compared to that of the car, insights into both the supply of multimodal transport services and the multimodal travel behaviour are required. It turns out that the current state of knowledge is lacking, especially with respect to long-distance transit (10-100 km). In order to gain the required insights into individual travel behaviour on the multimodal travel market, empirical data collection has been performed. The goals of this fieldwork are to study the objective and the subjective choice alternatives of the respondents, and to develop models describing multimodal travel behaviour. With respect to the latter, the authors investigate which attributes of the trip chain are decisive, and which are of lesser importance. This paper describes the motivation, the outline, and the execution of the fieldwork aimed at collecting the required research data. The unit of analysis is a recently performed trip from the traveller's origin to his destination, for which the train is the main transport mode.
