Abstract

The ongoing programme for building up the ITS infrastructure in Finland includes altogether 10 main areas, of which the central one is the multimodal transport information system. The system will be based on a geographical information system (GIS-T) that will work as a framework to which real-time transport-related information can be attached. The geographical information system development work has started by defining the implementation and maintenance process of the virtual database covering the Finnish road and street network. The system will evolve into a comprehensive transport information system via various pilot projects. At the moment, there are seven pilots under way in the area of traffic information exchange. In addition, two pilots are planned in the field of geographical information exchange. (A*)
