Abstract

The Dutch signalling system, operational since 1982, is currently undergoing a major overhaul in order to be able to deal with the 1,000 km of motorways to be equipped with the system by the year 2000. A new graphical user interface is one of the important and visible enhancements, but it is the integration of the user interface for traffic and system management with tools for configuration management (including road layout) that makes this new user interface especially interesting. The user interface was created through a joint effort of professional software engineers, system integrators and end users by means of an interactive development process. This way of working encouraged acceptance of the resulting interface, but also gave rise to a less controllable project and additional costs.
