Abstract

CCTV have been equipped in the long expressway tunnels simply to observe traffic, and the function of automatic incident detection by image processing technology is being added recently in these tunnels in order to detect incidents quickly such as vehicle stopping, low speed, or continuous lane changing. There is more potential information contained in the images of the CCTV. Joint research on utilizing the information, in addition to the above functions, has been carried out with nine private companies for the use of detecting a fire and measuring visibility and luminance inside tunnels. The result of the research shows those functions are nearly ready for practical use although more field experiments in terms of operational aspect are required. (A*)
