Abstract

This research investigation is basically a continuation of the multivariate studies of vehicular speeds which were conducted by Oppenlander at the University of Illinois. It was limited, however, to a study of vehicular speeds on four-lane highways in rural areas. The purpose of the investigation was to evaluate the variables present on four lane highways which represent the driver, the vehicle, the roadway, traffic conditions and environmental characteristics. Speeds on four-lane rural highways throughout the state of Illinois were studied during the summer of 1962.
