Abstract

The short version of this study was presented at the 'Transportation Planning Research Colloquium 1992, Innovation in Traffic and Transport', Rotterdam, November 26-27, 1992. For the abstract see C 967 (or typ than half the amount of passenger kilometres and more than 40% of car kilometres is related to free time traffic. So, free time car traffic causes a substantial part of the problems related to car use. Based on characteristics of free time traffic, research has been undertaken to study the possibilities for reducing car use for leisure purposes. Measures can be taken that will affect the generation of trips, the distribution (which affects the distances in relation to individual trips) and the modal choice. The measures can be based on changing habits, costs, quality of car infrastructure and other modes and the assignment of 'free time traffic shares'.
