In May 1997, the International Conference on Transport Survey Quality and Innovation was held in Germany. This subject is increasingly receiving attention. The authors witness the development of new techniques and methods. However, they also find a growing feeling among experts that many transport surveys are inadequate, while at the same time the policy demands on survey data are increasing. The purpose of the conference was to develop and disseminate a set of guidelines for quality in the design and conduct of transport surveys. This paper summarises the findings of the conference, which are relevant to the development of transport surveys, as well as in the Netherlands. (A)
