Abstract

Roads should be classified into groups to improve quality of performance and to rationalize design and administration. A certain uniformity of the image of the road which is recognized by the road user who may react to this by a comparable uniformity in behaviour, will improve road safety. Connector roads, feeder roads, access roads and residential streets show in this order a decreasing traffic function and a increasing environmental standard. A table is given with the various standards per characteristic road feature. Some suggestions are given on(re)designing roads.
