It is argued that the design of methods that combine land use and transport is needed urgently at the regional level. In the recent past, The Netherlands Agency for Energy and the Environment (NOVEM) has successfully developed a method for integrated infrastructure and urban design on the neighbourhood level called "Transport performance on location" (VPL). Currently, NOVEM is attempting to produce a similar method for the regional level named "Transport performance for the region" (VPR). In this paper, the main question is how content and process aspects, especially related to sustainability, can be linked in the complex field of forces of regional transport and land use planning. The authors summarise the findings of their reflection so far.
