Roadside studies have been introduced as a concept in road accident investigations, partly in connection with the introduction of breath tests and partly in connection with road accident investigations where a comparison is made between an accident group and a control group without accidents. Risk investigations are principally two parallel investigations where the blood alcohol content is determined of drivers who have not been involved in road accidents and who are participants in the normal traffic without any suspicions of influence of alcohol. The material is collected with the help of systematic investigations in a defined, geographically limited area, in this case Lycksele (population 10000) in the northern part of Sweden. During the same period and on the same roads, another investigation was made of drivers involved in road accidents. These two groups of drivers are compared and analyzed and a risk factor is calculated. The report also presents the results from four other similar investigations made in USA and Czechoslovakia.
