An interview with Mark Bodger of Siemens Traffic Controls is presented, in which he discusses the future of urban traffic control (UTC) systems in the UK. A criticism of current UTC algorithms is that they are old but Bodger says that this fails to recognise that they are adequate for the task. Intelligent infrastructure will lead to more information being made available to UTC systems. At present, management strategies tend to be based around providing priority via fixed control points, e.g. traffic signals and junctions. Network management could lead to less roadside infrastructure and improve safety by decluttering. The use of floating people data and floating vehicle data, using mobile phone data, is envisaged.
