Abstract

33000 road accidents involving pedestrians were recorded in France in 1985, 17% of the total number of personal injury accidents, 94% of these occurred in urban areas. In an attempt to reduce these numbers, a competition was set up, which ran from November 1985 to May 1986. 101 communities submitted their entries. The approaches proposed for safety improvements are outlined and discussed.
