Abstract

This volume contains four appendices which present supporting material for the secretary of transportation's national highway safety needs report to congress. Appendix a: literature summary, presents the results of a survey of the existing literature to identify (1) the major elements or target areas of the overall traffic accident problem, (2) actions taken to reverse current accident trends, and (3) the effectiveness of these actions. Appendix b: countermeasures evaluated, presents a list of all traffic accident countermeasures and support activities that were evaluated. Appendix c: advisory panel findings, presents the results of a survey to obtain a consensus of expertise on the effectiveness of traffic accident countermeasures. Appendix d: state surveys, presents the results of interviews with state and local officials in 20 states and 593 local jurisdictions which constitute the national sample used to extrapolate national estimates of cost and time for implementation of traffic accident countermeasures.(a) for abstract of the national highway safety needs report see IRRD abstract no 223604.
