The National Road Safety Strategy for 2001 to 2010 provides a framework for coordinating the road safety initiatives of the federal, state, territory and local governments and of others capable of influencing road safety outcomes. The Strategy was adopted by the Australian Transport Council (ATC) in November 2000 and commenced in January 2001. The target of the Strategy is to reduce the annual number of road fatalities per 100,000 population by at least 40%, from 9.3 in 1999 to no more than 5.6 in 2010. ATC requires annual reports on implementation and outcomes of the National Road Safety Strategy and associated two-year Action Plans. In alternate years, a review with recommendations for a new Action Plan is required. The current Action Plan, which was approved by ATC in November 2002, covers calendar years 2003 and 2004. This progress report includes statistics on outcomes and a summary of progress on implementing priority Action Plan items in each jurisdiction. The report was compiled in October 2004 by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, with input from all jurisdictions. Statistics in this copy have been updated to September 2004. (Author/publisher)
