Abstract

The paper gives a review of the development of national road traffic in terms of car ownership, traffic volumes on main highways and road network. Due to a comparatively "late start", growth of traffic and road infrastructure in the Netherlands has been rapid even in recent years. These trends and their impacts on one hand caused protests and lively public discussion and on the other hand led to the development of study tools and the execution of a number of traffic studies.
