The National Transportation Safety Board's approach to improving safety.

Abstract

This speech presents the specific mission of the United States National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). This mission is as follows: a) to determine the probable cause of accidents; and b) to develop recommendations to improve transportation safety. The speech also describes the NTSB's scope which is multi-modal and covers: (I) all U.S. civil aviation accidents; (II) selected highway accidents; (III) railroad and (IV) pipeline mishaps involving a fatality or substantial property damage; and (V) major marine accidents or any involving a public and a non-public vessel.
