Abstract

The aim of the study presented in this poster is to calculate the neck injury criterion (NIC) in dummy tests, and to investigate the influence of the following parameters: velocity change (delta V), acceleration level, shape of the acceleration pulse, head restraint position, seat back stiffness, etcetera. Additionally, the relationship between NIC and neck loads is investigated. The seat of a middle class car was modeled using multibody simulation techniques (MADYMO occupant simulation software). The test object was a database of the 50th percentile Hybrid III dummy equipped with a more biofidelic neck (TRID neck). Brief attention is paid to a series of sled test performed to validate the mathematical model, and to a parametric study conducted. The study suggests that it makes sense to use NIC as an indicator for the risk of soft tissue neck injuries in rear impact dummy testing, although the biofidelity of the dummy is limited.
