It is of the utmost importance for road safety research to have reliable exposure data for different categories of road users. In order to obtain information on the mileage of foreign vehicles in the Netherlands, SWOV commissioned a survey at frontier stations in September 1975. The results show that the share of both foreign cars and lorries in the total mileage on Dutch roads lies between 2% and 5%. A comparison with a central bureau of statistics survey shows that Dutch cars travel twice as much abroad as foreign cars do in the Netherlands. Dutch lorries travel approximately five times as much abroad as foreign lorries in the Netherlands, according to a comparison with a shell Netherlands survey.
