Abstract

This paper performs a qualitative analysis of the fieldwork results of a perception study among twenty 15 to 18 year old persons with a different educational background from the surroundings of the Dutch municipality of Amstelveen. The investigation method consisted of: (1) two group discussions: one group consisting of 5 young females and the other of 5 males; and (2) 10 face-to-face in-depth interviews. The paper contains information on: (I) the influence of families, neighbourhood, police, and friends on the development of the respondents' traffic and travel behaviour; (II) the respondents' opinions about cycling in relation to legislation and traffic safety; (III) their attitudes towards various transport modes: a) bicycle; b) car; c) moped; d) "snorfiets"; and e) public transport; (IV) the respondents' nighttime travelling modes; (V) their opinions about the usefulness of traffic education in primary and secondary schools; and (VI) the respondents' opinions about bicycle traffic behaviour, the usefulness of cycling, and traffic behaviour of car drivers in comparison with their own behaviour. It can be concluded that growing children should be able to develop both a critical attitude towards car use, and a positive attitude towards bicycle use, through education and publicity.
