Abstract

During the last few decades, the number of traffic casualties in the Netherlands has decreased considerably and, as a result, the Netherlands has become one of the safest countries in the world. Nevertheless, we still have the ambition to further reduce the number of casualties. The Minister of Transport intends to offer Parliament a Strategic Road Safety Plan 2007-2020, in which we expect a new target for 2020 to be presented, as well as how the target is to be realized. This report aims to make a contribution to this Strategic Road Safety Plan. SWOV's knowledge and views are summarized in this report. It wants to inspire the compilers of the Strategic Road Safety Plan, those who influence it and those who ultimately decide. In his letter to Parliament of 31 May 2007 the Dutch Minister of Transport has defined three cornerstones for Dutch road safety policy: cooperation, integrated approach, and Sustainable Safety. SWOV supports these three cornerstones and will further elaborate on them in this study.
