Abstract

This paper was presented at the `Community traffic solutions for the future' session. While several traffic calming guidelines have been developed, there are few guidelines available that describe a process to implement the improvements. The objective of this paper is to describe a process to implement traffic calming in the Town of Markham. The objective is to develop a community-based process that also ensures that the proposed solutions are technically supportable. As a result, the Town of markham has developed Neighborhood Transporation Committees (NTC's). These Committees are intended to provide alink between the community and City Hall. The NTC is composed of elected officials and area residents. This paper provides further details on the roles and responsibilities of each group. In addition, a flowchart and process is described which identifies the interaction of the various groups, their roles and responsibilities and the process for funding approval. (A)
