Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the transport situation in the Netherlands. Transport determinants are examined including a) geography, b) population, c) employment, d) education, e) the economy and f) temporal patterns. The transportation system is described including a) the structure of the public transport system, b) car ownership and use, c) urban and regional transport and d) interurban transport. Travel patterns are considered with statistics provided for a) number of trips, b) trip length, c) trip purpose and d) modal split. The Netherland's policy making structure is described and its main problems and policies outlined.
