Abstract

Important system problems associated with the operation of an automated highway network are examined under the assumption that the synchronous moving cell control scheme is the basis for individual vehicle control. The fundamentals of a network traffic management strategy are discussed and important constraints that are imposed on control system design by such a strategy are stated.
