Abstract

The results of a preliminary study of a novel method of intersection control are presented. The method consists of making a short-term prediction of traffic behaviour and selecting the best future sequence of light settings. The first of these settings is effected and the entire procedure is repeated at regular intervals. The method has been tested by extensive simulation. The control which results proves to be better than or at least as good as fixed-cycle control and various types of traffic-actuated control. The proposed control moreover has the definite advantage of being adaptive to changes in traffic conditions.
