Abstract

This White Paper sets out the UK Government's integrated transport policy. This is based on: (1) integration between different modes of transport; (2) integration between transport and the environment to allow sustainable development; (3) integration between transport and land use planning at national, regional and local level, and (4) integration between transport policies and policies for education, health, regeneration and social inclusiveness. Amongst the subjects covered by the report are: policy for road building and traffic management, improvements in bus and rail transport, improvements in planning of urban streets to encourage walking and cycling, safety and accessibility in travel, reduction of air pollution caused by traffic, and planning on a regional basis. A commission for Integrated Transport is to be established to advise the Government on the implementation policies, and the English local authorities will be required to produce 5 year plans to implement the integrated transport policy. A summary of this White Paper has also been published (see IRRD 491255). Proposals for trunk roads in England are set out in `A new deal for trunk roads in England' (see IRRD 491258); proposals for Wales are published in `'Transporting Wales into the future' (see IRRD 491256); for Scotland in `Travel choices for Scotland, Cm 4010' (see IRRD 491257).
