Abstract

The SHRP-A003A project introduced new test methods and procedures that can be easily implemented in mix design and in the development of performance-based specifications. This paper presents the basic concepts behind the design of pavements through a tie between performance observations, structural pavement design, and mix design provided by performance based specifications. It also summarizes the latest developments in the permanent deformation and fatigue research areas of SHRP Project A-003A, conducted at the University of California at Berkeley, and illustrates how the results can be used in the mix analysis/design process.
