Abstract

As construction costs increase, a new view of engineering economy is coming into focus, according to this author, who forecasts that public transportation organizations will become more efficient and business-like in their approaches to construction. He believes that highway infrastructure construction is likely to focus on the reconstruction of the system originally built in the 1960s and 1970s, and that public mass transit systems will struggle to balance the vision and needs of the future with the reality of financial constraints. He predicts that the marriage of mass transit and highway corridors will create opportunities and challenges as right-of-way and other related costs escalate in urban areas.
