Abstract

The world of traffic sensors is changing rapidly as manufacturers develop new technologies and retire older ones. This article highlights a new handbook released by the Federal Highway Administration that provides a comprehensive reference on sensors for traffic management on surface streets, arterial highways and freeways. The handbook will enable users to select specific technologies for various applications based on the sensors' capabilities. The handbook also contains information that will help users configure, install, and maintain the sensors to achieve a highway agency's goals for traffic management. New applications of sensors to intelligent transportation system functions are discussed.
