Abstract

This paper proposes a new traffic flow continuity hypothesis. The concepts of vehicle field and steady traffic flow are introduced. The momentum of traffic flow is redefined. The assimilating relationship between traffic flow and fluid flow is adjusted. Traffic flow Euler's equation and viscosity momentum differential equation are established, and combining continuum equation, Euler's equation and viscosity momentum differential equation, relationships among traffic parameters are obtained. A highway capacity calculating model for basic sections are set up. An evaluating performance measures system for level of service of highway by non-dimensional traffic pressure is established. Finally, the field data observed on freeways in China are used to verify the results.
