Abstract

A new test dummy neck has been developed specifically for motorcycle crash testing. This new neck is intended to replace the modified Hybrid III neck which is currently used with the Motorcyclist Anthropomorphic Test Device (MATD). The new neck is designed, with the aid of mathematical modeling, to address the unique posture and multi-directional biofidelity requirement of the MATD. It incorporates materials and features that are new to dummy neck design. It may be adjusted for a wide range of inclined torso angles that are typical of the large variety in motorcyclist riding postures. The performance of this neck is presented relative to established biomechanical neck data. (A)
