Abstract

In the end of 1996 new regulations concerning work zone safety design and operations were issued in the Czech Republic. The paper briefly presents these new regulations. Until 1997 accident rates in work zones had the same increasing trend as the rest of the road network. Following the application of the new regulations there is a distinct decrease in accidents with both slight and serious injuries. This positive result is confirmed when the accidents are analysed more in depth. For example, since 1997 every year has seen about a 20 per cent decrease of accident numbers in work zones caused by inappropriate driver's speed.
