New rollover ratings reflect dynamic testing, but tests don't affect ratings very much.

Abstract

New rollover tests use dynamic standards in addition to the static measurements of earlier tests, adding a new element to the rollover rating system. The rollover rating system was instituted in 2001 on a system of one to five stars. The top rating means the vehicle has less than a 10% chance of rolling over in a single-vehicle crash, with a start subtracted for each 10% increase in likelihood of rolling over. Even without the new test, other requirements mean that 2004 models are rated slightly differently than 2003 ones. Almost all vehicles tested earned three or four stars, with their static measurements of center of gravity height/track width ratio being a heavy influence. The article gives ratings of 19 2004 models from eight manufacturers.
