Abstract

New technologies are rapidly finding their way into the car cockpit. Whilst these will make it possible to enhance the safety, enjoyment, and amenity of driving, the potential benefits to be derived from them could be outweighed by their potential to distract, overload and confuse the driver, and induce maladaptive behaviours that compromise safety. This paper discusses the current and future anticipated impact of these technologies on the driving task, and the human factors and safety implications of these developments. (Author/publisher)
