Abstract

For some time now, Road Safety Officers in New South Wales have been calling for an integrated training program to enhance their skills and focus on key learning needs. In 1998, the NSW Roads and Traffic Authority, along with the Local Government and Shires Association, the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australia (NSW Division) and Municipal Employees Union responded to their request and invited the authors to develop a competency based professional development program for Road Safety Officers in NSW. In 1999 this was developed in consultation with the NSW Roads and Traffic Authority, the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australia (NSW Division) and the Motor Accidents Authority. The pilot program which is being delivered by the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australia commenced in NSW in February 2000.
