Abstract
A Transportation Research Board (TRB) study committee has assessed the future of traditional transportation finance, notably through the fuel tax, and has identified financing alternatives. The committee gave special attention to methods of charging fees that relate directly to the cost of providing services, such as tolls and mileage charges, and recommended immediate changes to strengthen the highway and transit finance system, as well as actions to prepare the way for more fundamental reform.
